Are you ready for a Mystery KAL?

July 6, 2014

Knit Purl Hunter is doing a mystery hat KAL in the month of July with HiKoo Simplicity yarn. We are completing this hat for our Monthly Colorwork Project and would love some company! The first clue came out on July 3, but it isn’t too late to join.

Each Thursday, a new clue for the Progressive Needles Knitalong will be released and at the end, you’ll have a cool hat and a chance to win a set of Addi Clicks. Wait! What? A set of Addi Click needles? YES! Skacel is sponsoring this KAL and if you submit your project, you are entered for a chance to win.

Want to join?

Here’s what you do:

  1. You’ll want two contrasting colors of HiKoo Simplicity (two skeins of the main color and one of the contrasting). We have so many colors to choose from at the shop!
  2. Bookmark Knit Purl Hunter so that you can get the newest clue every Thursday. There are also helpful tutorials and tips!
  3. Join the Knit Purl Hunter group on Ravelry to chat with others about the KAL and check out other color combinations. Share your project with the Knit Purl Hunter group and the YH Ladies group so we can see what everyone is doing (because we’re curious, not nosy! Well, maybe a little bit.).
  4. If you want to enter to win the Addi Click set, the rules are at Skacel.

photo (11)If you just want to knit along, great! We’ll post pictures of our progress here and you can  check on the hat in-person at the shop.

Our main color will be the 038 Seattle Sky (guess who picked this one) and the contrasting color will be a lovely mint green (colorway 009 Aqua Mint).

We already cast on Clue #1. Beautiful so far!

June Color Work Project of the Month

June 9, 2014

Have you seen the adorable color work project this month?

Das Monster LeggingsWith the monster trend in full swing, adding a cute monster face to the bum of leggings fits right in! These Das Monster leggings by Hrönn Jónsdóttir, are fantastic for babies and tots.  Plus, the pattern is free!

You make the creative choices with the face  and the colors for the stripes. In fact, the designer states that she is “completely confident about your ability to make up your own color arrangement.” How cool is that?

For this sample, Jen used Rowan Pure Wool Worsted, a superwash yarn that is wonderful to work with and growing in popularity here at Yarn Harbor.

What colors would you combine?

June Classes: Knitting

May 20, 2014

Summer is finally here! Well, “summer” in that it rains instead of snows. The birds are singing, kids are dreaming about the end of the year, and you might be planning for your family vacation. But what about your knitting? It’s an important part for any summer vacation!

Have you checked out our June classes? We have everything from Knitting 101 to a knit toy and leggings to a shawl and a market bag. Plus there is the Kids’ Knitting Workshop!

Knitting 101
Learn the basics of knitting while making yourself a hat! If you’ve never picked up a pair of needles before, or if you just need a refresher, this is your class. We will cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, and sew up a seam. From here the possibilities are endless. Bring a friend, or make some new ones, and join us today.

Tuesday, June 3, 10, and 24. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Elijah the Elephant

This cute elephant by Ysolda Teague makes a great toy for a little one! Elijah’s adorable round body is perfect for small hands to hold. Since this doesn’t have seams, this toy is constructed and stuffed as we go. Students should be comfortable using DPNs, but we will learn how to pick up stitches, do short rows, and interpret this interesting construction.

Tuesday, June 3, 10, 17. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Das Monster

Das Monster Is there anything cuter than baby pants with a face on the seat? We think not. Personalize these adorable leggings with your own special monster and customized stripes. We’ll learn how to knit in the round, do short rows, and kitchener stitch a seam.

Wednesday, June 4, 11, 18. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Aranami Shawl

aranami This sweet shawl incorporates a modular technique that can be easily learned in this class. Learn how this shaping works as well as get advice from someone who has knit this twice. Students should know how to pick up and cast on stitches, knit, and decrease stitches.

Thursday, June 5, 12, and 26. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Market Bag

June 5, 2014, is World Environment Day, so let’s celebrate by making a reusable market bag. A knitted market bag is so helpful for toy bags, laundry bags, book bags, beach bags, and, of course, shopping bags. (I’m sure you can think of otheruses.) Choose from two patterns (Oat Couture’s Stow-Away Shopping Bag or Plymouth’s Fantasy Naturale’s Market Bag) and cotton yarn (Fantasy Naturale is recommended) and make a bag you can use for years.

Thursday, June 5, 12. 6 – 8 pm. $20.

Kids’ Knitting Workshop
People 8 years old to about middle school can learn to knit in a workshop setting. Once you’ve mastered the knit stitch (and you’ll be amazed at the number of things you can make from knitted squares and rectangles) you can learn to purl, cast on, bind off. Let Jean know what you want to learn and we’ll go as far as you can in three weeks. We can also help newer knitters advance their skills and/or work on a project of their choice.

Saturday, June 14, 21, 28. 10 – 11 am. $20.

Think of the Birds!

May 6, 2014

Though spring is just arriving in Duluth and the birds are just starting to sing (at o’dark thirty), WildCare in the Bay Area is holding a Baby Bird Nest Craft-along. This organization is collecting 1,200 knitted bird nests to help nuture orphaned baby birds that come in to their center (and other registered wildlife rescue organizations) during the late spring and summer months.

These nests are used to keep the birds warm and supported while they grow up. Why so many? Well, birds make messes and use more than one nest a day. These nests can then be easily washed and used again.

Look at these little cuties!

Want to help? Click here for specific pattern instructions. What a great way to use scrap yarn!

On the Duluth front, we still have some yarn bits for nest building. Bring in a non-perishable food item and get a small bag of yarn bits to hang outside. Help the birds make warm and colorful nests! Once we’re out of bags, we’re out, so make sure to stop by soon!
