CustomFit KAL in January and February

Are you ready to start your first sweater? Or at least ready jump right in? Have you ever made a sweater and then it didn’t fit?

Well, Yarn Harbor has the solution for you! In January and February, we will be doing CustomFit Knit-Along. Creator Amy Herzog is known for her designs that flatter and are easily modified and her book Knits that Flatter, is a great resource (check it out in the shop!.

When Herzog developed CustomFit, a sweater pattern generator that tailors to your measurements, gauge, and yarn size, it was a huge leap forward with the design process. With a gauge swatch and your measurements, CustomFit creates a completely custom sweater, leaving no math for you to do.

If you are an intermediate knitter and comfortable with the basics of knitting, increasing, and decreasing, but  want some extra help, take the workshop! Meeting Wednesdays in January (7, 14, and 21), February (4 and 18), and March (4), take as many workshops as you want.  Sign up 48 hours before each Wednesday class to reserve your space! The more you take, the more you save! Pricing is $60 for all six, $45 for four sessions, and $15 for each single session.

October Classes: Knit and Crochet

Pumpkin beverages and treats are in the restaurants and the leaves are changing to their beautiful colors. Autumn is officially here! What will you knit or crochet this fall? Check out the October classes and see what catches your interest!

Knitting
Knitting 102: Chevron Hat

Chevron Have you taken Knitting 101 and are you ready to take the next step? Knitting in the round is the gateway skill to hats, mittens, socks, cowls, and sweaters. In this class, you will learn how to knit with circular needles and DPNs, use stitch markers, read a pattern, do several types of increases and decreases, and use two colors of yarn. This is a great skill-building class using a trendy chevron pattern! Students should know how to cast on, knit, and purl. Please note that there will be homework between classes.Thursday, October 9, 16, and 23. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Basic Socks

Basic Socks Socks are the perfect “go anywhere” project—quick, easy and portable. In this class, you will learn how to knit a basic worsted weight sock on double point needles. Students should be familiar with knitting and purling.Tuesday, October 7, 14, and 21. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Traditional Christmas Stocking

Featured techniques: knitting in the round, two-color Fair Isle (stranded) knitting, afterthought heel, reading simple charts, and Kitchener Stitch or Three-needle Bind-off.Thursday, October 9, 16, and 23. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Arm Knitting

Arm Knitting Arm knitting is a quick and gratifying way to make a unique knitted garment. During the class period you will learn the technique of arm knitting, and finish a big cozy cowl that makes a perfect, low-pressure gift. Norwegian Mittens

This Beth Brown-Reinsel pattern is inspired by a pair seen in a museum and they involve many different motifs. It is written for three sizes (child, women, and men). The gusseted thumb and pointed tip add to the authentic style. This pattern is for knitters who are comfortable knitting in the round on double points, magic loop, or the two circular method. Featured techniques: double cast-on (long tail), yarn dominance, knitting with two yarns in the left hand, and raised increases.Wednesdays, October 29, November 5 and 19. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Simple Shell Scarf

Learn how to crochet a quick scarf with a beautiful lace-looking design. This scarf looks very intricate and will make others think you spent lots of time crocheting, but in reality it is a simple pattern to learn and repeat. It would make a great gift for someone.

Winter Ensemble: Hooded Scarf and Mitten Set
This class covers all the basics you need for a Northern Minnesota winter: hat, scarf and mittens all in one class. We will start with the hooded scarf and then move on to the matching mittens. This class is an intermediate level, if you have basic crochet skills you will do fine.

Four-Way Moebius Cowl

Moebius The Four Way Moebius Cowl is a true Moebius cowl; it is done in the round with no beginning or ending. It can be worn in four different ways: as a straight cowl, over the shoulders, as a balaclava, or doubled around your neck. It is a fun project that crochets up quickly.Monday, October 6 and 13. 6 – 8 pm. $20.

Eloise Baby Sweater
This little sweater is a quick little project that can be made in a variety of sizes from 6 months to 3 toddler. It is an intermediate project, if you have basic crochet skills you can do this class. It is mostly done in double crochet stitches.

Easy Crochet Shawl
This pattern is an beginning lace pattern. It can be done in a fingering, sport, or worsted weight. The outcome will be different depending on which weight you choose. It is a great class for anyone with a basic knowledge of crochet stitches.

Monday, October 20 and 27. 6 – 8 pm. $20.
Legwarmers
This is Northern Minnesota — who doesn’t need multiple pairs of leg warmers? You can make these up in a weekend to go with any outfit, or make several for all your friends. They are making a comeback, you know. This pattern is pretty simple to master. This is a single session class.

Knitting 102: Knitting in the Round

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA You are all excited about learning to knit, and you want to expand beyond flat scarves and washcloths. This is the best next step. We will be exploring knitting in the round both with circular needles and double points. We will also be exploring a couple of hat edges: ribbing and the rolled brim. You should be comfortable with the knit and the purl stitch.

Tuesday, September 9 and 16. 5:30 – 7:30 pm. $30.

Piper’s Journey

document_upload31037-5_medium2 Piper’s Journey is a lovely crescent-shaped shawl that drapes nicely around the shoulders. Knit out of sport-weight yarn, this shawl is a fast knit and perfect for warding off a fall evening’s chill. As we fly through the garter stitch body, we will learn how to apply a lace border and practice our chart-reading abilities.

Two Mittens on One Circular

TwoMittens You’ve heard about knitting two socks at one time on a long circular needle, I’m sure. You can use this variation of the magic loop technique to knit anything that’s basically a tube, and if you knit two at the same time they will not only match, but be done at the same time. (This class is not recommended for your first mitten.)

Pink Ribbon Cowl
This cowl is made with a chunky weight and it goes really quickly. It is made in one piece and woven through itself before it is stitched up. It fits very nicely around you neck and under your coat. It was named the Pink Ribbon Cowl because it looks just like the ribbon and when it was being designed it just seemed it needed to be made in pink. It could of course be done in any number of colors in spite of the name.

The sun is shining, the weather is warm, and we’re finally knitting on the beach. Knitting for the winter is always an option, but a nice, lightweight project is even better. With four weeks left of the summer, check out the classes below to see what you might.

Foxy A wild little friend to adorn your little one’s head and add some whimsy to his or her winter wardrobe! The beanie is knitted in two colors in one piece, using the intarsia in the round wrap and turn method. You will also learn Alice Yu’s shadow wraps short rows technique. This is such a cool way to produce a totally adorable hat.Wednesday, July 30, and August 6 and 13. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Behmathon: Three Shawls from Martina Behm

Hitchhiker Have a favorite skein of fingering weight yarn, and waiting for the perfect project? Pick the Hitchhiker, Trillian, or Lintilla to show it off! Using garter stitch and an interesting, yet simple construction, Martina Behm’s patterns are a great introduction to knitting shawls. In this class, we will learn the different techniques that go into Behm’s patterns, including short rows and working with a recipe. 

Thursday, August 7, 14, and 21. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Kids’ Knitting Workshop
We’ll meet every day for a week to help people from 8 years to about middle school age learn to knit. If you have mastered the knit stitch we can move on to purl, cast on, bind off, and read a pattern. Let Jean know what you’d like to learn and we’ll go as far as you can in five lessons.

Monday through Friday, August 18 – 22. 10 – 11 am. $25.

Crochet
Tussa Tank TOp
This tank can be worn all year round. It works well in a light cotton or silk blend. We will learn some basic shaping and use a series of simple stitches. Materials: 1400-1700 yards Dk or fingering or sock weight yarn, size F crochet hook, safety pin style stitch markers, and Tussa tank top pattern (available at Yarn Harbor).

Dangercrafts: Knit a Monster

Penelope the Empathetic Monster, Daphne and Deliliah the Momma & Baby Monster, or Maddox the Mischievous Monster are just a few of your choices in this class where we’ll all knit up adorable (and only slightly scary) knit monsters. You choose your pattern from Rebecca Danger’s Etsy shop (via Ravelry) and we’ll knit up our own monster community.

Toe-up Sock with an Afterthought Heel

Used to a cuff-down sock construction and want to learn a new technique or two? Have a special (perhaps self-striping) skein of sock yarn, but don’t want to “waste” any of it? Then this is the class for you! We will discuss patterns vs. recipes, learn two cast-on techniques, the construction of the perfect-fitting sock, afterthought heels, and Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off. Please note that this class is not for beginning sock knitters and there will be homework between classes.

Come have fun in this class and at the end you can do a fashion show.

June Classes: Crochet

June has many great crochet classes too! How will you expand your skills this summer?

Crochet 101: Dishcloths
Learn five of the basic stitches used in almost all crochet. Chain, Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet, Double Crochet, and Shell stitches will be taught and practiced. This is a great class for anyone who is looking to get back to crochet but wants a refresher, or for someone who has never picked up a hook and wants to start at the beginning.

Ankle Socks
This class will teach you a simple crochet sock that is easy to make and fun to wear. It is a low ankle sock that can be worn all summer in any type of shoe. Even if you have never made a pair of socks before, you can do these! In two weeks you will have yourself a new pair of socks to wear and want to make some in every color.

Friday, June 6, 13. 10 am – 12 pm. $20.

Prayer Shawl
In this class we will make a prayer shawl. You can decide to make it for a special person whom you know is in need, or if you would like, we at Yarn Harbor will send it on to a woman battling breast cancer through a local group called Circle of Hope. Jo’Elle designed several crochet patterns for this cause.

Summer Shrug
This shrug is a great easy pattern. It can be worn over a tank top, summer dress, or as a cover over a bathing suit. It is a great piece to take along with you where ever you go. With the way our weather changes here in the Northland, you never know when you will want something to throw on quickly. It is also great when you step inside the air-conditioning.

Summer is finally here! Well, “summer” in that it rains instead of snows. The birds are singing, kids are dreaming about the end of the year, and you might be planning for your family vacation. But what about your knitting? It’s an important part for any summer vacation!

Elijah the Elephant

This cute elephant by Ysolda Teague makes a great toy for a little one! Elijah’s adorable round body is perfect for small hands to hold. Since this doesn’t have seams, this toy is constructed and stuffed as we go. Students should be comfortable using DPNs, but we will learn how to pick up stitches, do short rows, and interpret this interesting construction.

Das Monster

Das Monster Is there anything cuter than baby pants with a face on the seat? We think not. Personalize these adorable leggings with your own special monster and customized stripes. We’ll learn how to knit in the round, do short rows, and kitchener stitch a seam.

Aranami Shawl

aranami This sweet shawl incorporates a modular technique that can be easily learned in this class. Learn how this shaping works as well as get advice from someone who has knit this twice. Students should know how to pick up and cast on stitches, knit, and decrease stitches.

Market Bag

June 5, 2014, is World Environment Day, so let’s celebrate by making a reusable market bag. A knitted market bag is so helpful for toy bags, laundry bags, book bags, beach bags, and, of course, shopping bags. (I’m sure you can think of otheruses.) Choose from two patterns (Oat Couture’s Stow-Away Shopping Bag or Plymouth’s Fantasy Naturale’s Market Bag) and cotton yarn (Fantasy Naturale is recommended) and make a bag you can use for years.

Kids’ Knitting Workshop
People 8 years old to about middle school can learn to knit in a workshop setting. Once you’ve mastered the knit stitch (and you’ll be amazed at the number of things you can make from knitted squares and rectangles) you can learn to purl, cast on, bind off. Let Jean know what you want to learn and we’ll go as far as you can in three weeks. We can also help newer knitters advance their skills and/or work on a project of their choice.
