June Classes: Crochet

May 21, 2014

June has many great crochet classes too! How will you expand your skills this summer?

Crochet 101: Dishcloths
Learn five of the basic stitches used in almost all crochet. Chain, Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet, Double Crochet, and Shell stitches will be taught and practiced. This is a great class for anyone who is looking to get back to crochet but wants a refresher, or for someone who has never picked up a hook and wants to start at the beginning.

Monday, June 9, 16, 23. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Ankle Socks
This class will teach you a simple crochet sock that is easy to make and fun to wear. It is a low ankle sock that can be worn all summer in any type of shoe. Even if you have never made a pair of socks before, you can do these! In two weeks you will have yourself a new pair of socks to wear and want to make some in every color.

Friday, June 6, 13. 10 am – 12 pm. $20.

Prayer Shawl
In this class we will make a prayer shawl. You can decide to make it for a special person whom you know is in need, or if you would like, we at Yarn Harbor will send it on to a woman battling breast cancer through a local group called Circle of Hope. Jo’Elle designed several crochet patterns for this cause.

Monday, June 9, 16. 10 am – 12 pm. $20.

Summer Shrug
This shrug is a great easy pattern. It can be worn over a tank top, summer dress, or as a cover over a bathing suit. It is a great piece to take along with you where ever you go. With the way our weather changes here in the Northland, you never know when you will want something to throw on quickly. It is also great when you step inside the air-conditioning.

Monday, June 9, 16, 23. 1 – 3 pm. $30.

June Classes: Knitting

May 20, 2014

Summer is finally here! Well, “summer” in that it rains instead of snows. The birds are singing, kids are dreaming about the end of the year, and you might be planning for your family vacation. But what about your knitting? It’s an important part for any summer vacation!

Have you checked out our June classes? We have everything from Knitting 101 to a knit toy and leggings to a shawl and a market bag. Plus there is the Kids’ Knitting Workshop!

Knitting 101
Learn the basics of knitting while making yourself a hat! If you’ve never picked up a pair of needles before, or if you just need a refresher, this is your class. We will cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, and sew up a seam. From here the possibilities are endless. Bring a friend, or make some new ones, and join us today.

Tuesday, June 3, 10, and 24. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Elijah the Elephant

This cute elephant by Ysolda Teague makes a great toy for a little one! Elijah’s adorable round body is perfect for small hands to hold. Since this doesn’t have seams, this toy is constructed and stuffed as we go. Students should be comfortable using DPNs, but we will learn how to pick up stitches, do short rows, and interpret this interesting construction.

Tuesday, June 3, 10, 17. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Das Monster

Das Monster Is there anything cuter than baby pants with a face on the seat? We think not. Personalize these adorable leggings with your own special monster and customized stripes. We’ll learn how to knit in the round, do short rows, and kitchener stitch a seam.

Wednesday, June 4, 11, 18. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Aranami Shawl

aranami This sweet shawl incorporates a modular technique that can be easily learned in this class. Learn how this shaping works as well as get advice from someone who has knit this twice. Students should know how to pick up and cast on stitches, knit, and decrease stitches.

Thursday, June 5, 12, and 26. 6 – 8 pm. $30.

Market Bag

June 5, 2014, is World Environment Day, so let’s celebrate by making a reusable market bag. A knitted market bag is so helpful for toy bags, laundry bags, book bags, beach bags, and, of course, shopping bags. (I’m sure you can think of otheruses.) Choose from two patterns (Oat Couture’s Stow-Away Shopping Bag or Plymouth’s Fantasy Naturale’s Market Bag) and cotton yarn (Fantasy Naturale is recommended) and make a bag you can use for years.

Thursday, June 5, 12. 6 – 8 pm. $20.

Kids’ Knitting Workshop
People 8 years old to about middle school can learn to knit in a workshop setting. Once you’ve mastered the knit stitch (and you’ll be amazed at the number of things you can make from knitted squares and rectangles) you can learn to purl, cast on, bind off. Let Jean know what you want to learn and we’ll go as far as you can in three weeks. We can also help newer knitters advance their skills and/or work on a project of their choice.

Saturday, June 14, 21, 28. 10 – 11 am. $20.

Think of the Birds!

May 6, 2014

Though spring is just arriving in Duluth and the birds are just starting to sing (at o’dark thirty), WildCare in the Bay Area is holding a Baby Bird Nest Craft-along. This organization is collecting 1,200 knitted bird nests to help nuture orphaned baby birds that come in to their center (and other registered wildlife rescue organizations) during the late spring and summer months.

These nests are used to keep the birds warm and supported while they grow up. Why so many? Well, birds make messes and use more than one nest a day. These nests can then be easily washed and used again.

Look at these little cuties!

Want to help? Click here for specific pattern instructions. What a great way to use scrap yarn!

On the Duluth front, we still have some yarn bits for nest building. Bring in a non-perishable food item and get a small bag of yarn bits to hang outside. Help the birds make warm and colorful nests! Once we’re out of bags, we’re out, so make sure to stop by soon!

May 9 and 10: Exciting Events!

May 5, 2014

We have two very exciting events happening in the store this weekend.

Starting on Friday, May 9, and going through Saturday, May 10, we will be one stop on the Creative Shop Crawl. Yarn Harbor, Kellly J’s Sewing Center & Quilt Shop, Susie’s Greenhouse, West Tischer Cottage, Homestead Gatherings, Hannah Johnson Fabrics, Casa Latte, and Cookie Temptations will all be participating in this celebration of local, creative shops. Stop by one of these stores to get a passport and once your passport is filled, you will be entered in the Grand Prize Drawing!

In addition, Saturday marks new Three Irish Girls colorways, which will premiere at Yarn Harbor! Kathy was involved in the creation of this colorway (and the only clue she’ll give us is “think of flowers”!).  These new colorways are in the same line as the Duluth-inspired colorways, exclusive to Yarn Harbor!

If that wasn’t enough, we’re also having a One of a Kind Trunk Show with unique colorways in limited quantities. These will be available throughout the week, ending on May 18.

This weekend will be an exciting time at the shop! Make sure to stop by!
