September Classes and KALs Galore!

August 25, 2013

September smells like crisp red apples and newly sharpened pencils to me. I love the moment when the days become a bit cooler and the leaves start changing color. It’s the end of summer, but it’s also the beginning of something bigger than you or I – winter is coming. These cold seasons teach such resilience and offer an opportunity to learn to surrender to that which you cannot control.

Fall may be my favorite season because the change is so pronounced and so. darn. beautiful. The  colors of the trees around here rivals the fabled East coast foliage. It’s incredibly inspiring. As those long summer nights shorten into those lovely cool fall evenings it just feels like the right time to settle in and learn something new. That back to school feeling is contagious. It makes me want to dig out my plaid, my brogues, and my tweediest wool.

Lucky for those of you who aren’t in school anymore (or for those who are – we aren’t exclusionary around here!) we have a ton of knitting and crochet classes to satisfy that urge.

Castle Danger Beer Tasting Night!

August 11, 2013

This last Friday wrapped up our summer beer tasting series – Jamie from Castle Danger Brewing stopped by and poured some delicious brews for us to sample.

We were lucky to get to try four delicious offerings – the Castle Cream Ale, Danger Ale, Gale Force Wheat, and their new 17-7 Pale Ale.

Everything was beyond delicious, and Jamie couldn’t have been friendlier. Although it is sad to be done with these events, we couldn’t have imagined a more pleasant way to end the series.

If you missed the tasting but want to check out Castle Danger Brewery, you can find them on tap at 7 West and Tycoons. Or, if you’re in the mood for a little scenic drive up the shore, you can find them at 3067 E. Castle Danger Rd., right before you get to Gooseberry Falls. Growlers are available here on Fridays from 4-7 and Saturdays from 3-7. They also run the Castle Haven Cabins, which is a beautiful, affordable place to spend a few nights, a great place for a knitting retreat, and one of Kathy Thomas’s favorite spots on the North shore. We highly suggest that you and your buddies book a cabin, grab a few growlers, and knit a weekend away up here. You can find more information about the Castle Danger Brewery, and Castle Haven Cabins, online at and

August Felt It – Airy Scuffs

August 4, 2013

Slippers, you guys. Let’s talk slippers.

We live in such a special part of the world. The trees, the lake, all those deer running around, the nature, the huge clouds, the clean air!

But also, and let’s just be real, the cold. Duluth is a chilly kind of town. Lately, during the day at least, it’s been easy to pretend that “chilly” isn’t a conditionally appropriate adjective for Duluth, but it’s hard to pretend at night. It gets chilly. Here’s some tips for dealing with chilly summer evenings: remember that shivering takes more energy than just relaxing and sinking into the cold. Remember that you can always knit a pair of slippers.

photo(6)These airy scuffs are just the perfect thing – just enough open toe action to feel seasonable. We used Lamb’s Pride by Brown Sheep, and the little bit of mohair in the yarn really makes a difference, softness-wise.

If you happened to complete last month’s Felt It project, bring it in to show it off and receive 10% off your materials for these adorable slippies!
