COWL NECK PONCHO

This poncho is a great way to stay warm on those cold winter mornings. I keep one at my desk — keeping a draft off your neck and shoulders lets your whole body stay warmer. This one starts at the neck and works down so you can make it as long as you want it to be. This is a simple design and can be done by even the most beginner crocheter. It would also make a great Christmas gift for a special gal in your life. It is made with a large size hook and worsted weight yarn so it goes quite quickly.

DO THE DOUBLE TAKE: DOUBLE KNITTING BASICS

Tuesdays, November 6, 13, and 20
5:30 — 7:30 pm

Double knitting seemed so mysterious to me, almost magic. Then I tried it and fell madly in love with the technique. Come join me while I share my passion! First we will knit a wrister to get comfortable carrying the yarn and switching colors, and then we will make a 2-color hot pad in a beautiful design. We will learn the cast-on, how to manage the joins, casting off, following a chart, and how to fix those annoying errors that can occur. Experience: be very comfortable with your basic knitting skills and be able to follow a pattern. Bonus technique: attached and detached i-cord for the buttonholes for the wrister.

Materials: TPHPE by Heather Zoppetti from Ravlery, worsted wool (for the hot pad the fiber does need to be wool, but you don’t need a lot, you can use leftovers), wrister pattern available from the instructor, size 6 needles, stitch markers, tapestry needle, crochet hook (optional).

Cost: $30 + materials
Instructor: Katie Viren

GLOVES FOR YOUR SMARTPHONE

Tuesdays, November 27, December 4, and 11
5:30 — 7:30 pm

It is cold out. Your smart phone rings. You have to take off your glove or mitten to answer it
because of the electro-static surface. Brrrr. What can be done!? Laura Nelkin has come up with a solution! This is a “how to knit a glove” class with a bonus. You will learn the tubular cast on, corrugated ribbing, stranded knitting, glove construction, and how to add electrically conductive thread to your glove to make them work! If you just want simple one color gloves, you can do that as well. Experience: Knitting and purling in the round, working with small needles, and carrying two colors (optional). Come and make something that will wow all your friends and family and make your fingers very happy this winter!

Materials: Technika by Laura Nelkin from Knitty.com, around 250 yards of two colors of fingering weight yarn, size 0 and 1 dpns, or size to get gauge, tapestry needle, 5 yards of conductive thread (available for $5 from the instructor), stitch markers.

Eager to try your hand at 2-color knitting? Stranded knitting is best done in the round, so we will be working on a hat. In this class you will learn how to read a chart, how to carry two colors, how to keep your tension from getting too tight, how to deal with the yarn on the back side of the knitting, and how to switch colors. This hat also features corrugated ribbing and a different centered decrease at the top. You may choose one of three patterns from “The Duluth Suite” by Katie Chameleon. This is a very fun class. I always love seeing what color combinations people work with.
